WiLCO (CEO Park Sang-won), an electric vehicle battery pack thermal runaway delay material development company, announced on the 5th that it succeeded in developing a 1mm thick composite sheet with excellent heat blocking performance by enduring more than 60 minutes in flames of 1200℃, an electric vehicle battery pack thermal runaway environment.

It is known that the product showed excellent heat blocking performance, such as maintaining the temperature of the opposite side of the flame-applied side below 280℃ in the torch evaluation of about 1,200℃ or higher.

Electric vehicle battery thermal runaway is caused by various causes such as overcharging or external shock of battery cells. When generated from the unit module, it may lead to fire or explosion of the battery pack in a short period of time in an environment without a material for preventing thermal runaway.

A Wilco official said, "If we apply the sheet for the top cover of the battery pack developed by our company, it can delay the fire by more than 20 minutes in the event of a thermal runaway, which is a great help in driver evacuation and fire suppression."

Wilco said it will develop and apply a Celtu Cell thermal runaway delay material with a thermal runaway delay function while efficiently managing the heat between the battery cells and the cells.

"The battery pack thermal runaway delay material can be used not only for vehicles but also for all devices equipped with batteries," said Kim Kwan-kyu, head of Vmaker. "We are communicating with various customers as the use is wide."

Park Sang-won, CEO of Wilco, said, "Our thermal runaway delay sheet will pass the final reliability evaluation of electric vehicle manufacturers and be applied to mass-produced models this year. We hope that our products will give stability to the people concerned about electric vehicle fires and contribute to the popularization of electric vehicles at the same time."

Vmaker is a joint venture of PHC Group, which operates operations in 12 countries around the world and provides engineering solutions such as auto parts and semiconductor equipment parts.

Wilco is developing low-k dielectric high heat dissipation board materials for satellite and military ultra-high frequency bands in addition to battery pack thermal runaway delay materials. In the early days of its foundation, it attracted seed investment from POSTECH Holdings. Recently, it successfully attracted investment from Hansaeyes24 Partners.
