Wilco Inc., a startup specializing in high heat dissipation and low-dielectric materials for the thermal management of electronics and the new space era (a private company-led space development project), announced that it has attracted seed investment from POSTECH Holdings (technical holding of Pohang University of Technology).

Wilco Inc. is a company that develops next-generation electronic materials called agglomerated boron nitride (ABN) with high heat dissipation and low dielectric properties.

Although boron nitride has long been considered as an electronic heat dissipation solution as a high heat dissipation insulator, first-generation boron nitride has a plate shape, making it difficult to apply it due to the issue of anisotropy (a phenomenon in which heat moves only in a specific direction). However, Wilco succeeded in developing high heat dissipation particles with isotropic properties (heat moves in all directions) by making boron nitride spherical through agglomeration and special chemical treatment.

Korea is now becoming a technology powerhouse with its own aerospace technology, just as Nuri's 'Little Satellite' successfully injected for the first time recently. In this aerospace field, not only projectiles but also communication technology is very important, and low-dielectric communication boards are used for communication in the ultra-high frequency band (12 to 40 GHz), which is a military communication network. The current situation is that most of these low-dielectric communication boards are still imported and used for foreign products. Wilco is currently developing a low-dielectric copper clad laminate (CCL) that is a PCB substrate material, and is further developing a low dielectric that has high heat dissipation characteristics.

Currently, Wilco is undergoing reliability evaluation and verification of materials through the Korea Electronics Technology Institute. In addition, the company is conducting field tests through Ntrium, a company specializing in electromagnetic shielding and heat dissipation materials. Wilco plans to develop new products targeting global auto parts makers and applications related to battery, radar, and lidar batteries, and will conduct evaluation of low-killed CCL materials through collaboration with Korea's largest antenna manufacturer.

Park Sang-won, CEO of Wilco Corporation, said, "In the upcoming electric vehicle era and new space era, the importance of thermal management systems and low-dielectric materials of electronic products will increase rapidly, and countries with material technology will become the global top tier."

"With the advancement of electric and electronic technologies, including automobile electrical equipment and satellite antennas, technologies that can increase heat dissipation (放熱) and reduce dielectric loss are drawing attention," said Jeong In-oh, a reviewer at POSTECH Holdings.
